A small business website is usually the only thing a customer sees before deciding whether to call. Most of the ones we’re asked to replace were built on a drag-and-drop builder years ago, by someone who has since stopped answering, and they’ve been slowly drifting out of date since: prices that no longer apply, a contact form nobody has tested, hours that were right two Christmases ago. We build the site properly and stay on to keep it accurate, and where the business also needs the technology behind the site: booking, records, a form that has to reach the right person; we build that too rather than handing you off.
What usually goes wrong
The site was built once and never touched again
Not because the owner doesn’t care, but because changing anything means logging into a builder they half-remember or paying someone by the hour. A site that costs money to correct stops getting corrected, and customers read the stale version.
The contact form goes nowhere
It’s the single most common thing we find on a rebuild: a form that silently fails, or delivers to an address nobody has read in a year. Every one of those is a customer who thinks you ignored them.
Slow on a phone, which is where the customers are
Builder sites ship megabytes of CSS and JavaScript for a layout that renders in kilobytes. On a phone on mobile data, that’s the difference between a call and a back button; and Core Web Vitals are a ranking input, so it costs you the impression as well as the click.
Nobody can say who actually owns the domain or the site
The domain is registered to a former web guy, the hosting renews on somebody’s personal card, and there’s no copy of the site anywhere the owner controls. This is fixable, but it’s much easier to fix before the relationship ends than after.
The website and the tools behind it were bought separately
So the booking widget, the invoicing tool and the site each hold their own version of the truth, and keeping them agreeing is somebody’s unpaid job. Where it’s worth it, we put one system behind all of them; where it isn’t, we say so.
